Up until March, I have been an active duty Military Wife. My husband Tim (we just celebrated our 15th year anniversary of our wedding in Vegas). Tim retired from the Air Force this March and prior to that we had been stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, NV. It was some of the best and WORST years of our lives but I was sad to move from a place that had NO BUGS, no humidity, no cold, even in Dec-Feb, it was never below 60 degrees. My kids have never worn "Winter" clothes and did not own a coat when we moved across the country in the "Rolling Psycho Van" to Eden, North Carolina, right on the southern Virginia border. This is where my husband grew up and for the first time in 20 years of living all over the world, we are now part of a truly amazing and LARGE family. No more holidays alone with just us and the kids, no more worrying about finding someone to watch the kids in case of emergency, such as what happened last week. I will blog about that later. Right now I am a HUGE Twilight Saga book fan and have read all four books at least 3 times. Saw the first movie on DVD a month ago and I had never even heard of the books or what all the fuss was about. In that month, I have read them again and again, especially New Moon and Eclipse, in anticipation of the movies coming out.
My daughter Emily who is 11 has a beautiful pony named Rusty who is wonderful in dressage and jumping. I LOVE working with horses and training both riders and the horses. I have been involved in animal rescue for years (hence my Email address greytmari@yahoo.com- meaning "Greyt" greyhounds. I have fostered hundreds straight from the track and have adopted and loved and lost two. I currently have three rescued dogs, a miniature black dapple Dachshund named Moo Cow who has two very blue eyes. I also have a wirehaired Dachshund named Nash that we rescued in a Puppy Mill raid and found that he and many others had had thier voiceboxes removed so that they cannot bark. Talk about cruel!! Then there is Chipper, my Heinz 57 terrier mix that is the sweetest boy in the world. We found him in Las Vegas and he had been horribly abused. We have had him almost 10 years now and he is an outgoing, loving, no-longer afraid boy. I call him my luv sponge as he is always where I am. We have three rescued cats and two Blue Tongue Skinks. I am a licensed Veterinary Technician (basically an RN for pets) and have worked in several animal hospitals in Vegas and I am currently trying to get a job here but it is much harder in a small town. I volunteer at the Humane Society in Virginia and it is a no-kill shelter. Well, that's about all me except the fact that while working as a vet tech in Vegas, I got addicted to pain pills after I fell and injured my knee and had to have 2 surgeries. That was almost 9 years ago. I went through 2 detoxes and finally a 30 day rehab in Pheonix, Arizona and thank God I have been clean and sober for almost 8 years now. What an amazing gift I have in recovery. I have never talked about this before but it is cathartic and if just one person reads my blogs and has this problem (There are THOUSANDS out there addicted to Oxy-Contin, Lortab, Morphine, Valium, xanax, and many other pills. I have chosen a path that lets me help others and that is all I could ever ask. For the first time in my 38 years of life, I am finally feeling like a grown-up and I realize that God used my addiction so that in the end, I could help others.
